The Fall Workshop Starts Tonight at 7PM With Photojournalist Renée C. Byer

Over 100 graduate, undergraduate and military visual journalism students from the Newhouse School’s Department of Multimedia Photography and Design (MPD) will spend Oct. 19–22 documenting the lives of Syracuse residents as part of the school’s annual Fall Workshop.

The students will use photography, recorded sound, video and writing to tell stories of people in the surrounding community. Their work will be published online at http://fallworkshop.syr.edu in the weeks following the workshop, but live updates will be posted throughout the weekend.

The event will open with a talk by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Renée C. Byer on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium, Newhouse 3.

“The Fall Workshop is often cited by students as one of the best educational opportunities they had during their time in Syracuse,” says Bruce Strong, MPD chair and director of the workshop. “We are grateful to all the professional coaches who give freely of their time to help our students grow, and to the community members who open their doors to our students.”

Thirty-five professional photojournalists, video producers, graphic designers, photo editors, writers and other visual communicators from across the country will spend the weekend at Newhouse, providing advice and guidance as coaches.

On Sunday, Oct. 22, participating students will present their final stories in a community show from noon to 2 p.m. The event will begin with a reception in the lobby of Newhouse 1, where the print show will be on display, followed by a viewing of the multimedia stories in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium in Newhouse 3 to view the multimedia stories. The community show is free and open to the public.
